Let’s do a post today about cascading chocolate fountains! Oh yes, chocolate fountains. I’m sure you’ve seen, or at least heard of the cascading chocolate fountain. It is exactly what it sounds like — a fountain, cascading over with warm, smooth Belgian chocolate. Oh my. What a wonderful addition to any wedding reception. The chocolate fountain is beautiful, affordable, and delicious.

Chocolate fountains use a fondue that is heated, melted, and then cascaded over the tiers — creating a smooth, thin wall of chocolate-y deliciousness. Large cascading chocolate fountains hold up to 20 pounds of chocolate (serves approximately 200-250 guests), and more chocolate can be added as the night goes on. They are easy to assemble, easy to clean, and if you don’t want the hassle of either of those — easy to rent.
Wondering what types of finger foods to serve with your chocolate fountain? Most commonly used for chocolate dipping are strawberries, pretzels, marshmallows, grapes, vienna fingers, caramel squares, and graham crackers. Many other fruits are also popular all well as rice krispie treats. Be careful not to use any foods that can crumble, as the pieces can get into the chocolate fountain. If you would like to incorporate such foods, simply keep a ladle on hand so that you can pour chocolate over them!
Many people wonder if it is okay to use the cascading chocolate fountain outdoors. You can, however, keep in mind a few negative factors:
1. Temperature. Chocolate fountains need to keep a specific temperature to keep the chocolate melted and smooth. The air temperature outside can affect the fountain temperature, making it harder to maintain.
2. Bugs. Many insects love sweet smells and will more than likely be attracted to the chocolate. Keep in mind that the cascading chocolate fountain is open and will probably bring about the bugs.
3. Wind. Not only can the wind also affect the chocolate fountain temperature, but it can also make a bit of a mess. The chocolate cascades in a thin layer, and wind can cause it to move and possibly spray onto the table and surrounding treats.
Therefore, I would recommend keeping your chocolate fountain indoors, or in an enclosed area. Remember to also place small plates and napkins on your fountain table as well as skewers for your guests. This way, fingers are kept out of the chocolate and they have something to place their yummy treats on! Have a table for your cascading chocolate fountain display that is within 10 feet of an outlet and that is sturdy enough to hold 150 pounds.
Finally, keep in mind that you can purchase or rent a chocolate or white chocolate fountain, and the finger foods you can choose to serve are endless. Have fun with your cascading chocolate fountain — your guests will love it and it will make a wonderful focal point at any reception!
